First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed has stated that women in leadership positions bring diverse perspectives and drive positive change. She made the remarks while speaking at the opening ceremony of the Asia Pacific Region Young Women in Governance Workshop, which was held at the Champa Central Hotel on Sunday.
Emphasising the diverse perspectives and driving positive change brought about by women in leadership positions, the First Lady stated that Girl Guiding is not just about developing future leaders but also about empowering women and strengthening societies. She noted that this desired change could be brought about by providing mentorship and leadership training, encouraging women to participate in decision-making processes, promoting gender equality at every step of life, and creating supportive networks and communities.
Speaking at the event, the First Lady emphasised that while significant strides are being made towards gender equality, the journey is far from over. She said that despite the commendable presence of women in various leadership roles, there remains a pressing need for greater diversity and representation. She noted that while we celebrate the achievements of women excelling in their respective fields, there is under-representation elsewhere, where women can—and must—thrive.
Highlighting the success of the guiding movement in the country, the First Lady expressed her pride in witnessing many women who have ascended to senior roles in both the Government and the private sector, attributing their success to their guiding background. The First Lady encouraged the continuation and expansion of these leadership initiatives to benefit our present and future generations.
At the event, the First Lady was presented with a commemorative gift on behalf of the Asia-Pacific region and the Maldives Girl Guides.
