President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that the land reclamation project in N. Hen'badhoo will commence in November this year. He made the remarks while addressing the Hen’badhoo residents during his visit to the inhabited islands of South Miladhunmadulu Atoll.
Speaking to the community, the President stated that the Government has prioritised the land reclamation in Hen'badhoo as one of this year’s key development initiatives. He noted that a comprehensive engineering design must be completed before work can begin, as the site lies close to the planned harbour wall. He added that consultations have already been held with the Hen'badhoo Council, and the project is expected to be awarded to a contractor by September.
The President highlighted that a maximum land area that can be reclaimed for Hen'badhoo is six hectares. He explained that the additional land would be allocated for housing, infrastructure development, and sports facilities, in accordance with the island’s land-use plan.
As part of this plan, the President pledged to build a full-sized football pitch on the reclaimed land. He emphasised the importance of careful planning to ensure the area is developed and protected sustainably.
The President also noted that recruitment efforts are underway to strengthen services at the island’s health centre, which is expected to operate for at least 16 hours a day by the end of the year.
During his visit, the President officiated the commencement of two major projects: the construction of a new mosque and the development of the N. Hen’badhoo Fitness and Recreation Centre.
