President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed that holistic development is well within reach through efforts grounded in the national interest. The President made this statement while addressing the opening ceremony of the Velana International Airport’s new terminal.
At the function, the President appealed for a firm commitment to prioritising national interest at this momentous juncture, as the nation celebrates the inauguration of the Velana New Terminal and the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence.
Reminding all Maldivians that we are a nation united by a common language, faith, and shared history, the President stated that prioritising national interest over personal gains and prejudices is not merely a responsibility, but a vital necessity to ensure that future generations inherit a prosperous and harmonious nation. He described the new terminal as a symbol of what can be achieved through collaborative development.
The President stated that the decision to officially inaugurate the Velana New Terminal on Independence Day was deliberate. He emphasised the importance of economic sufficiency for sovereignty, describing the airport as the pillar of economic independence. He expressed optimism that the airport will drive growth, particularly in tourism, as well as the broader economy.
At tonight’s ceremony, the President expressed his gratitude to all those involved at various stages of the project, which spanned over a decade. He specifically recognised former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for their significant roles during their respective terms in office.
He further expressed his gratitude to the Saudi Fund for Development, the OPEC Fund for International Development, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, all of which generously provided the funding in addition to the allocations made by the state budget.
The President acknowledged the services of all those who contributed to accelerating the pace of work, thereby ensuring the timely completion of the project.
He stated that success lies in the efforts of many individuals working diligently towards a common goal, and that tonight, we celebrate such an achievement.
