President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, during a visit to Sh. Komandoo on Tuesday evening, announced that the island’s airport will be completed and operational within 30 months. He reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to accelerating nationwide development through strategic infrastructure projects.
Addressing residents as part of his ongoing tour of inhabited islands in North Miladhunmadulu Atoll, the President outlined key details of the Komandoo Airport development. He stated that the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has been contracted to undertake both reclamation and construction works.
The President revealed that reclamation will be completed within eight months, facilitated by state-of-the-art dredgers sourced through agreements with two internationally recognised companies. An 11,000-tonne dredger is expected to arrive by the end of October, followed by a 40,000-tonne dredger in mid-November, which will be deployed for works in Rasmalé. A third dredger is scheduled for December, to begin immediate operations in HA. Dhidhdhoo. Upon completion of works there, anticipated within three weeks, the dredger will be reassigned to Komandoo.
Highlighting the significance of the airport project, the President described it as the most transformative initiative for the island’s future. He also shared updates on other development efforts planned for Komandoo.
Among these is a housing project set for 2026, which will see the construction of 50 residential units. Physical works are expected to commence in the first quarter of next year. The President also announced plans to renovate Komandoo School and to begin construction of an Indoor Sports Complex early next year.
In the health sector, the President pledged to introduce dialysis services to Komandoo before year-end. He further committed to resuming the stalled water and sewerage network project and assured residents that their concerns would be addressed through responsive governance and timely delivery of promises.
