President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has consulted with the Addu City Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and heads of local institutions regarding the city’s most pressing issues and development priorities.

The meeting, held at the Addu City Council Secretariat, provided a platform for council members to outline the key challenges facing the city. Electricity emerged as the most urgent concern, with the Council requesting a permanent solution to ongoing power issues. They also called for improvements to the water and sewerage systems, including stable networks for water and electricity, citing frequent service interruptions. The Council further requested that these services be extended to the under-construction tourism zone in Feydhoo, as well as to newly allocated plots for individual housing.

Flooding on certain roads and the completion of road development projects without proper street lighting were also raised as major concerns. Council members requested that prices for construction materials, petrol, and diesel at the STO outlet in Addu be aligned with those in Malé. They additionally noted that the number of security personnel on the island is insufficient for its population and urged an increase in police numbers.

The Council highlighted that, despite the establishment of a cath lab in Addu City, many patients are still referred to Malé for treatment under Aasandha. They called for the lab to become fully operational as soon as possible.

Representatives of different islands within the council also raised local concerns, including the development of housing flats, Link Road repairs, and address issues related to contract employees.

The council further requested the expansion of airline services at Gan International Airport and proposed the development of a dedicated tourist beach on one of the two five-hectare plots planned for reclamation in Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo.

President Dr Muizzu assured the attendees that the Government will give due consideration to the concerns raised during the meeting. Cabinet ministers and heads of State-owned Enterprises in attendance provided detailed updates on the progress of ongoing projects across the city.
