President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stated that through the diligent prioritisation of his housing pledge, its realisation has now been made possible, with work towards its implementation already underway.
He made this statement while addressing the nation at the official ceremony commemorating Republic Day. In his remarks, the President outlined his Administration’s ongoing efforts and forthcoming initiatives aimed at ensuring adequate housing for all citizens.
Referring to efforts to increase usable land in the Greater Malé Region, the President assured that, within five months, announcements would be made regarding the allocation of 15,000 residential plots on the land reclaimed at Rasmalé. He also announced plans to commence the development of 3,000 housing units in the Greater Malé Region, along with 4,000 units being developed through India’s line of credit. He added that details of these projects would be released shortly.
The President also revealed that the target demographic would be individuals aged 18 and above who do not own homes, with a particular focus on facilitating family housing pathways. He stated that the objective is to identify the beneficiaries of the housing schemes by the completion of the land reclamation works.
Noting that land reclamation work is being undertaken at an accelerated pace in the Greater Malé Region, the President stated that efforts would gain further momentum in December. He expressed confidence that, with additional dredgers set to be deployed next month, the work would progress at three times the current speed.
